”Our wedding was inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice because this novel reveals a story of true and eternal love and I have always had a great interest and passion for the Regency Period. The 1996 Pride and prejudice film and countless blogs and books on Regency fashion and style helped provide our inspiration and ideas for the day.
We applied the regency/Pride and Prejudice theme throughout as many of the services we employed as possible including the cake design, the use of a horse and carriage, the ceremonial music, our choice of colours and of course the period venue and gardens. To create a more personal touch and to emulate the bespoke hand made techniques of the period we chose to have a lot of items uniquely handmade including the bride’s hair comb, groom’s silk regency style waistcoat and period cotton shirt and all the wedding favours and stationery were designed and made by ourselves, we even sealed invitations with a wax hand stamp as accustomed in the 19th century. During the ceremony we utilised a passage from the novel as one of our readings.
The groom and the groom’s men of course wore top hat and tails! The processional party in particular carried the theme through their regency styled dresses complete with elbow gloves and bouquets made with field flowers inspired by the 1996 film. I even handmade my own bridal shoes and enjoyed doing it so much that shortly after the wedding I have even started my own business making bespoke bridal shoes and accessories!
We kept the atmosphere relaxed and fun for our guests with themed interests including a cravat tying competition, the provision of free top hats, fans and parasols for photos, a period ink pen and quill for messages. We actively encouraged our guests to partake in regency costume and were pleased to find many took up the challenge which created some superb photos and great memories of the day!”
